My fellow NewAdwords columnist and search engine optimization (SEO) guru Shari Thurow mentions in a recent column three reasons marketers should think twice before assigning search engine marketing (SEM) duties to their ad agency or marketing firm. Shari covers typical mistakes interactive agencies (or traditional marketing agencies with interactive divisions) make when attempting SEO and SEM.

She touches the tip of a very big iceberg. Agencies do many critically important things wrong, things that can be disastrous for marketers. Yet some agencies do things right. Let’s focus on agency best practices, and contrast these with potentially incorrect practices.

Understand the Big Picture

Smart agencies understand they must keep track of all advertising and PR and factor those activities into SEM campaign strategies. Research shows both online and offline advertising drives search activity. This goes beyond direct response TV (DRTV) infomercials driving sudden interest in a product or service.

When advertising is heavy, customers become curious. They turn to search engines for more information. Similarly, when PR or news coverage spikes, search inventory often surges, too. By understanding media and PR interaction effects on search, an agency can act as a central hub, and coordinate and adjust SEM campaigns accordingly.

Sell Results, Not Position

Agencies must resist the temptation to be position-focused when pitching clients on paid search. A results-focused campaign boosts the client’s bottom line. By de-emphasizing position, an agency allocates budget where it works hardest.

Google AdWords isn’t designed for position-centered campaigns. The invisible AdWords bid landscape can be tuned to find great volume and return on investment (ROI).

Big Campaigns, Broad Engines

Agencies with clients’ best interests at heart resist the temptation to use only a handful of high-volume, easy-to-manage keywords. Large keyword lists and multiple engines (rather than high-volume keywords in one or two engines) allows a smart agency to mine keyword-listing gold.

Anyone can pick 40 to 100 keywords for a campaign. The best agencies expand keyword lists to include longer phrases. They tap searchers closer to a buying decision, deliver high ROI and value, and run broad, balanced campaigns.

Match-Type Proficiency

SEM media managers must leverage the different match types available at each paid-placement engine. Overture has three match types: standard, phrase, and broad. It offers the ability to set bids differently by match type. Google’s match types are folded into the AdGroup, where each keyword can have a match type specified. Both Google and Overture allow negative keywords to ensure a broad match listing brings in targeted traffic and provides searchers with a good user experience (tending to result in high ROI for marketers).

It takes time and strategic thought to use all match types correctly, but the investment pays for itself. Make sure your agency knows how to tap match-type power.

Understanding Marketplace

Each engine has relationships between CPC/position/conversion/volume and ROI tradeoffs that come with changes in spending/budget. In almost all other online media, as budget with a specific media property (insertion order) rises, the CPM or CPC goes down in the negotiations. In paid-placement SEM, the reverse is true.

Media buyers must understand the relationships between position and volume in Overture, Google and other paid-placement venues.

The Right Technology for the Right Job

SEM is different from other online marketing. More variables contribute to its success or failure. In addition, the level of control in paid placement is nearly real time. Agencies that truly want to ensure client success understand the right technology can make a huge difference in the time required to manage a campaign and in the campaign’s success.

Go the Extra Mile

Marketers rely on their agencies to provide new opportunities while executing the best possible campaigns using already selected media. Successful agencies go beyond creative development and media-spend allocation. They learn about SEM best practices, research new media opportunities, understand the contextual inventory issues, and develop an understanding of the client’s business.

If agencies want to play in search, they should get serious. If they don’t, marketers will create in-house SEM divisions. Any agency that doesn’t take SEM seriously should not be given the responsibility of planning and executing SEM campaigns.

After months of scouring the internet, I could not put my hands on the 2 million links various search engines said were available to do my book promotions. First, let me say I perceive myself as an intermediate user of the internet, but maybe my perception was misguided as I searched and realized I couldn’t put my pointer on the links I wanted.

The promotion of my book began with submitting a press release (PR) to one of the major PR services on the internet. They tracked how many click through(s) received, and I began to think, if so many eyes are looking at the PR on this site and web crawlers (whatever those are?) are picking up the PR for other sites; what would limit me from submitting as many PRs as possible? This was not the only site that provided this wonderful FREE service and the more places I had the PR, the greater my chances of being picked up by “big” media. My imagination began to go wild, conjuring up that lone journalist who was itching to break the story on the next bestseller. You chuckle! With this PR service, I placed the needle in the haystack but I could improve my chances if many needles were placed. A technique I learned from my days of online sweeping. What is that you ask? If allowed, the more you entered a particular sweepstakes the better your chances of winning as was one man’s story where he would send out literally thousands of entries and had won valuable prizes. My odds with sweeping were not stellar but I do have a few trinkets to show for my limited efforts. Hopefully, with my quadrupled book promotion efforts I could have stellar results—dreaming again.
<b>Tip 1:</b> There are auto-fill internet form software available and some even designate a few empty fields for your own personal use. A lifesaver when you have to input the PR summary line more than a few times.
<b>Tip 2: </b>Don’t input your social security number and credit card information because I have read of mistakes made because of the ease of auto-fill.

Okay, I have deviated.
So I proceed to use my internet service provider and searched for “submit press release” and was in heaven when it responded with 2 million sites to upload my PR. I would spend hours <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://maverick-money-club.com/myreview.html” target=”_blank” style=”text decoration:none;”>reviewing</a> which sites were free; which maybe more receptive; and which needed me to tweak the PR. Then just as quickly, my dream was shattered. I couldn’t go any further than 250 links, Why can’t I see or go to the other sites? I contacted my internet service provider to complain and they “allegedly” helped me to fix the browser. That didn’t work, so I moved on to the next major internet service provider, and again was limited to how many links I could access.

This time, I levied a stiff complaint about the violation of the freedom of information act, which I think only pertains to government (real smart). Why am I not allowed to access all 2 million-search results containing “submit press release”? It is only right that we have access to all the information on the internet, and not limited by how much or what we can see. Worst of all, we aren’t able to refresh the search and to be presented with other links we have not viewed. I assume, businesses with an internet presence would perceive themselves as having access to the world, where millions are able to view their products and or services, and as a result, their livelihoods would be better—meeting of the minds was just not taking place. And in this world of legalese, SPAM laws limit those who are promoting on meager budgets, and the few legal options we have of putting our product in the market place via the internet; where websites are actually telling us to submit information, our browsers (or internet service providers) are denying us access.

I continued checking the top search engines and kept encountering the same problems. What was most irritating about the search, besides the same links coming up, a few sites would fill several pages of the results with multiple categories. Do these websites have a monopoly on my already limited internet search? It was infuriating, the process was tedious, and now I was livid. Convinced my internet was broken, I was on a mission to fix it. I had another great idea, it was my browser (whatever that is?) that needed fixing and found a website that offered free software to do the job. I was nervous; I could be opening up myself to a can of worms, my husband would kill me for infecting HIS system. With all the scare of viruses and spy ware, I decided to only download what I thought were reputable software and ended up back at the number one software company. Based on their computer evaluation I already had the most updated browser. I was relieved, 1) I didn’t have to download anything, and 2) the browser was working.

What was the fix?
I continued my search efforts, going down the list of internet service providers. Alas! I think it’

A website is very important these days. If you don’t have a website, how can people find out about you and know more about your business? All global information has moved online, and every business is known to have a website, unless they want to run a huge risk. There are designers that create breathtaking designs, and there are copywriters who can churn out matchless phrases for your punch line. And yet, there is something even more important than having a website, as someone who runs a website will tell you- and that is web traffic.

Yes, traffic is the missing link between website and sales. Without the required traffic, a website is like a banner hanging on Mars: it doesn’t matter how good it is, because there is no one to see it. As such, we will discuss some strategies to improve the web traffic to your website, so that you can have more output from your marketing:

Target Market – To many business owners, the internet is a vast playground of limitless customers, and they launch a product or service without having any set target/s. However, once you know that the people behind the veil of the internet have very human likes and dislikes, you understand the importance of targeting. Understand what segment of the market you are targeting, and whether your message is compelling enough for them.
Content Quality – One can have over a hundred experts fine-tuning various types of techniques for promoting and selling the website, but the basics remain the same: content. Bad content and explosive marketing can attract a lot of people for a day or two. On the other hand, if the content you are offering is of good quality, not only will these people keep coming back for more, but they will also recommend it to their friends. This will set in motion the powerful chain of word-of-mouth publicity.
Visual appeal – There is so much crowding out there that no matter how good your content is, if it is not presented well, there is little chance of it ever getting out of oblivion. The internet has evolved a lot, and thanks to technologies like Flash and QuickTime, a web page can be made far more engrossing than was earlier possible. Not taking advantage of this would be a serious mistake. You need to hire a good designer and make sure that the website has a stunning visual appeal. When combined with good content, this will ensure that you get full exposure for your services.
E-Mail Marketing – Due to its extremely low cost, email is also used as a marketing medium. For this, you can either join certain internet groups and tell them about your product, or purchase email account databases from internet marketing research companies. They have separate email databases based on your requirements, and charge a very moderate amount. All you need to do is to send them a promotional message. You are bound to get some replies, even though the ratio may be very low.
Social Media – You can also use popularity of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. to promote your services. Unless you wish to compete for specific keywords and views, advertising on these platforms tends to be free of cost, which can be highly beneficial when done right.
Article Marketing – You can put up some articles on your website, and have an SEO expert modify the website so that it shows up higher on search engine rankings. Thanks to recent developments in search engines, this has become very popular.
Affiliate Marketing – In affiliate marketing, you tie up with other websites or affiliates, and help promote each other. Link exchange forms an integral part of his marketing, but one needs to be careful about the ratio of inbound to outbound links, as a serious deviation from normality can be heavily penalized by search engines.
Adwords – You can also compete in auctions and select the adword your service will represent on a particular day. This gets you noticed immediately, and directs more traffic flow to your website.

Use all these strategies to ensure that you get good traffic to your website, but do keep in mind that these things take a little time to show results.

The world of Pay Per Click Advertising can be both dangerous and fun. Doing the right thing can result in a successful advertising campaign, happy and satisfied customers and a great response to whatever you are promoting, be it affiliate or your own online store. On the same field, inexperience and a big wallet can be a dangerous mix, with some first time advertisers loosing hundreds sometimes thousands of dollars before turning a sale, only people who have experienced the loss can really appreciate the words here. So say someone was starting out for the first time, what could increase their chances?

Patience

One major reason why first time advertisers loose so much money the first time through is lack of patience. Trying and get as many clicks through to the site as they can, as quickly as possible. You do not want wasted clicks. A quick way to waste money is to have your first tier keyword on your keyword list; that being what you are selling. The majority of searches done for a first tier keyword are informational based, not sales based. Bidding on “long tail’ keywords will be much more beneficial to your strategy. Five clicks from “buy this object online” are much more beneficial than 50 clicks from “this object”.

Planned Improvement

While many professional pay per click advertisers continually update and change the wording, layout, style and rhythm of their ads; most first time advertisers do not. Improvement is a natural progression of any field and without planned improvement many small businesses fail, small websites never become large websites and across every field, one theme echoes throughout, the loss of money and time. Hold true to the fact, and it is a fact, that every loss is merely a learning experience of how not to do something. Calibrate your system accordingly and continue. With every ad variation, the results will differ, sometimes positive sometimes negative. Sometimes a small change in your adcenter or adwords structure can have great results. A plan to improve the Advertising campaign is a plan to succeed in pay per click.

Persistence

The systems works. Stick with it until you get it to work the way you want. But think before acting. Losing money comes from advertisers doing something wrong for too long.

Learn from text books and mistakes

Take the advice of hundreds of free informational based websites and implement it immediately. People do not generally write about something their inexperienced at. Keeping in mind, what has worked for someone else might not work for you. It could be some bad advice, alter your campaign accordingly and continue. Mistakes and “failures” are a natural way to learn. Understand what you did wrong and correct it for the next ad variation.

Now this is very straight forward direct advice. The strange thing about advice is that it means different things to different people, and only a small fraction of people take advice that they read or otherwise acquire. Philosophy and action can sometime be worlds apart. Some people need step by step actions to take and hold them by the hand to go through the process and there are many courses online and free informational based websites to help those people.

Playing in pay per click can be fun and enjoyable; a single changed word can lead of more quality leads to your site, and a string of words can cause sales. But just like playing in the minefield, it can be dangerous and without continual development can end in a negative result. The best advice is to learn, find out and use what works and discard what does not.

1.If you are at all serious about building a successful online business you will, at some point, realise the value of promoting other peoples products as an affiliate and you will also realise the importance of having affiliates promote your products. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Clickbank provide the most effective ways of promoting your own or other people’s products. Now, if you want legal advice you should hire a lawyer, if you want medical advice you should see your doctor. If you want to know anything about Clickbank – ask Harvey Segal! But, to save both you and Harvey a lot of time, just buy his two newest books: “Clickbank Vendor Supertips” and “Clickbank Affiliate Supertips”. Whatever you need to know about Clickbank, I can virtually guarantee you will find an easy to understand step by step explanation in Harvey’s Books. John Taylor Test-and-Track.com
2.I’ve been reading both books, and am incredibly impressed. Harvey has packed so much information that you NEED into ebooks that are amazingly readable. There is no waffle, no ‘business speak’ just EVERYTHING you need to know in plain English. So much so that I can hand on heart make this statement: ‘If you want to sell your own product or make money selling someone else’s online, one or both of Harvey’s books are vital to your success.’ Martin Avis kickstartdaily.com
3.Harvey, I’m envious! You’ve produced not one, but two great new ebooks for the ClickBank marketer. Every previous ClickBank resource has been multi-purpose, but you’ve gone one step better and produced separate tactical manuals for ClickBank vendors and affiliates. You have crammed in dozens of the most powerful tips and, in your usual style, every one of them gets straight to the point. Any ClickBank marketer who doesn’t earn more after reading your ebooks is simply not trying. Tim Coulter ClickBank Definitive Guide
4.I just finished looking over your ‘ClickBank Affiliate Supertips’ and ‘ClickBank Vendor Supertips’ ebooks and found them both to be loaded with valuable information. Your ebooks will provide anyone interested in either selling their products through ClickBank or marketing ClickBank products with the exact information they’ll need to succeed! Congratulations on a job well done — you are no doubt the ‘ClickBank King.’ Shelley Lowery Web-Source.net
5.As usual, Harvey writes a superb, concise guide for Clickbank affiliates wishing to maximize their affiliate commissions. His tips on linking (Chap 6.6) are worth their weight in gold. If you’re not satisfied with your current affiliate commission, I’d recommend you pick up a copy of this excellent book – it’ll show you a bonanza of tips and tricks that will increase your profits. Adrian Ling easybiztools.com
6.The CAS eBook is a real eye-opener! Your eBook could turn a newbie affiliate into a pro within a few hours itself. I’ve been a ClickBank affiliate for over an year now, and most of the commissions I’ve made are really trial and error ones. When I heard about your eBook, I first thought it would have the same old tips of cloaking your affiliate links n stuff, but boy was I wrong. You have mentioned solutions for problems that I wouldn’t have discovered on my own. I followed your tips and found at least 2 sites where I could be losing my affiliate commissions. I can’t imagine how many commissions I would have lost if I kept on promoting the programs without following your advice. Thanks again! Pooja Srinivas coursesuseek.com
7.Having all of Harvey’s great books is a must if you plan on doing any business with ClickBank! I totally absorbed the “ClickBank Affiliate SuperTips” before I started my online affiliate career with ClickBank products and boy am I glad I did. There is so much to absorb when first dealing with ClickBank and Harvey makes it all so neat and organized that you cannot help but be successful if you follow his methods.I did not hesitate to get my copy of “ClickBank Vendor SuperTips” when it came time for me to put my first product up for sale on ClickBank. I knew that Harvey would answer all my questions as a vendor just like he did when I was an affiliate. I simply cannot recommend enough these great resources for doing business with ClickBank! They are a MUST read if you want to truly get all the essential information you need to conduct your business properly. Denice Anderson NicheVaultKey.com
8.I just started reading and got to page 14 (CAS book). That tip on beating your PPC competitors is excellent! It was such an obvious way to do it, but I had never thought of it before and don’t know anyone else who had, so when I saw it on the page it leaped right out at me.
Google Adsense is advertisements you can put on your website in various formats, when someone clicks on an Ad you get payed a commission. Placing ads on your site is easy you just need to copy and paste a script onto your site which is easily created though google’s step by step setup. These scripts work by looking at your website page content and showing relevant ads based on this information.

Many people have been highly successful making money with Google’s Adsense, some actually make thousands of dollars per day. But there are many strugglers that only make 1 or 2 dollars per day which can be very frustrating. Common mistakes are made by these people, and with just a little extra effort, their earnings could be greatly improved.

The next mistake people make is the placement of there ads. It is very important to place your ads in strategic positions. If you don’t spend the time doing this your click through rate, and earnings will be low. I recommend using google’s help section in your adsence account. Do a search for ‘heat map’ this heat map shows you the positions that people are most likely to click. This type of information is invaluable, and will help improve your click though rate and earnings dramatically.

All this information is useless unless you have a steady stream of website traffic. I recommend learning basic on page optimization which is tips on making your site search engine friendly. On page optimization includes things like using keyword pacific page titles, and correct use of meta tags.

Let me first say that Google Adwords (Google pay per click), when done correctly, will give you the best return on your money compared to other online advertising options. At the same time, if you don’t know how Google evaluates your campaign, it could cost you a fortune.

Let’s first examine how Google is different from other search vehicles. Most search engines base the placement of your ad on how much you pay per click, i.e., the one who pays the most for a specific keyword will be positioned in the #1 spot.

Not so with Google. In an attempt to deliver more relevant content to its readers, Google uses several parameters to determine the order in which it serves up its ads. Not knowing or ignoring these parameters can cost you big! And unless your enterprise has very deep pockets, it can even mean the difference between success and failure.

When doing a pay per click campaign on Google, your ad position will be based on keyword selection, ad relevance to keywords, bid price, average click rate, how long visitors stay on your site, and even the match of your landing page to your ad and keyword. Essentially, you could be paying the most per click and be listed in the 5 position! Or vise versa, you could be paying less than the top 5 bidders and be in the #1 spot!

When setting up your Google Adwords (pay per click) campaign, all these elements will affect your position in the ranking, so make sure that:

•	Your keywords are not too broad

•	Your ad relates to your keywords (keyword grouping is important)

•	Your bid price is at least competitive

•	Your click rate is good (above 1-3% is great, below 0.5% is a killer)

•	Keywords you choose match the content on your landing page

•	You use text instead of Flash. This is very important…using Flash landing pages without text will affect your ad position in a negative way (Google perceives pages with no information the same as pages with non relevant information).

The more you adhere to these parameters, the lower your cost per click and the better your conversions will be. I appreciate Google’s well thought out ranking policies. When searching online for info, I hate nothing more than clicking on an ad that sends me to a page that has little or nothing to do with what I am researching. If I don’t see relevant information within a few seconds, I’m gone, and irritated about the waste of time!

SEO (that’s Search Engine Optimization) seems to have started 2008 on the wrong foot. A lot of clients are telling mus that they have experimented with it in the past, saying they hired someone who promised top rankings in Google but never came through. Jeremy Schoemaker even compares SEO’s to slimy car salesmen.

Make no mistake–any guarantee from an SEO is a red flag. There simply is no way to guarantee results, and anyone who does so should be dealt with cautiously. To understand why, let’s have a look at the business strategy behind search engines. (As always, Google serves as the best example, since it holds about two-thirds of the search engine market.)

Google, Inc. pulled in almost $17 billion in revenues in 2007. Where does the bulk of this money come from? Despite a wide array of all-stars in Google’s product line, only one program really runs the show: AdWords.

The reason AdWords is such a strong product, constantly growing its base and reshaping the entire global advertising industry, is that it provides targeting opportunities that were previously impossible. And Google is such a good search engine that the volumes of users create unheard-of economies of scale.

For as far as the eye can see, Google and the SEO community will be locked in a battle to outdo each other. Why? Because any compromise in the ability to target audiences threatens Google’s ability to keep making money. Its engineers continuously refine the algorithms that match keywords with web content. Yet despite the well-guarded secret recipe behind these algorithms, thanks to effective communication and tireless trial-and-error, SEO’s eventually uncover these secrets and sell their intelligence to the business community.

When you put it that way, SEO sounds a bit criminal, doesn’t it? But a lot of SEO’s (the “white hat” variety) are simply in the business of getting their clients to the top of the search rankings for their niche or area of expertise. This might be deemed a responsible use of SEO.

The problem is, not all SEO’s (and their clients) are this modest. So much like the one kid who acted out in grade school, because of these rogues, we all have to be punished.

Google wants its algorithms to decide who is #1. SEOs want to wiggle through the algorithms and force their clients into #1. The bigger guns tend to prevail, which is why SEO’s will almost always fall short of their guarantees.

Now for the irony: if these clients want a sustainable stream of new business from the internet, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising programs like Google AdWords are usually the best way to go. And targeted search results are the bedrock of an optimized campaign.

The moral of the story? It pays to invest in SEO and PPC concurrently, for a few reasons:

1. You’ll maximize exposure in both the sponsored and organic Google results.

2. You’ll be protected against the inevitable and frequent search engine algorithm changes.

3. You’ll inspire confidence in prospective customers who see that you haven’t just paid your way to the top.

Google tends to know a bit more about search engines than a consortium of mere mortals. If we play by their rules, the pie will be bigger for everyone.

Making the decision to choose the right niche market can appear to be a giant. This is especially true if you are doing it to make money. If it is a hobby then it really does not matter. If it is a business then you want to make sure you don’t make the mistake that many have made and have become so discouraged that they gave up on niche marketing.

Here are some guidelines that I use when determining a niche market.

Personal Interest – I am interested in a lot of topics but I want to make money and so I need to make sure that they niche I choose is profitable. As an example, if you’re interested in “How to build a spaceship“, the people that are searching for that knowledge is small. I do believe that it is best to choose a niche market that you have interest in since you will spend a lot of time with it, that is, if you want to successful with your website. Create a list of topics that you would like to market in and then apply the rest of the guidelines in this article to determine which is going to be the best niche to market in.

Niche market potential – Naturally you want to sell something that has a lot of people with interest in your niche. To determine this use Google Trends, Adwords and Amazon.com.com. Go to Google Trends and type 5 of your niche ideas into the search box. You will see on the graph which one is the most popular. The most popular is not necessarily the one that you want to choose and you will learn why in the next guideline. Next, navigate to the Google Adwords webpage, go to Google.com, enter your niche in the search box and count how many paid for sponsored listings there are at the top of the search results and the links down the right hand side of the page. If there are a lot of people paying to be in those spots, maybe there is even a second page, that tells you that there is money to be made in the niche you are considering and that you have competition in that niche. Lastly, go to Amazon.com and type in your niche. Are there books written about your niche and products for sale in your nice? If there is nothing then you should think twice about the niche you are thinking about and find something where there are products for sale.

Fad likeliness – This is a topic that I don’t here people talk about. You need to be cautious, regardless of the amount of traffic in that niche or the number of products that it is not just a fad. Having been in the retailing of vitamins and supplements there is something new every quarter and the old stuff sinks into insignificance, for example, bee pollen, deer antler velvet, shark cartilage and others. These are not as popular as Calcium and other vitamins, minerals and herbs that are well known and will always be sought for.

Competition – There are two different schools of thought on how to relate to competition. The ideal would be to find a niche with a lot of traffic but no one seems to be targeting it. Those niches are hard to find, kind of like the black 69 Camaro that has been driven 150 miles and then sat in Grandma’s garage. She lists it in the classifieds not knowing what the value is and you buy it for a song. Apart from the ideal there are the two groups and the first group suggests that you go into a niche market with little competition and you will be able to rank high in the search engines with good keywords. The other group suggests going for the more competitive niches since there is obviously more profit to be had and you just really need to know your SEO game. This is a choice that you will have to make for yourself. It is true though that to try to rank for a popular prescription drug without Adwords or some black hat SEO methods would be near impossible.

Those are the most important rules that will assist you in finding the best niche with great niche market potential. Take your time to make this decision, don’t rush or you will most likely regret it.

In the ongoing AOL sweepstakes, it appears MSN may be the winner over Google. So, what will it mean for all three companies?
AOL On the Block?
As you may know, the AOL unit at Time Warner has been thrashing around for the last year while trying to find a way to remain relevant. The problem for AOL, of course, is the continually decreasing use of dial-up modems as a method for accessing the Internet. Depending on the study you look act, dial-up modem access now accounts for approximately 40 percent of all Internet users. This number is consistently dropping as DSL and cable Internet access systems become more popular. The resulting struggles at AOL are having an interesting impact on the search engine wars.
Google and MSN are trying to position themselves to dominate online search. The situation boils down as follows: Google is the king, MSN wants to be it. This situation takes on particularly interesting impact when one considers that Google now supplies ads and search results to AOL. In doing so, Google derives roughly 10 percent of its revenues from the AOL relationship.
In the summer of 2005, rumors started that AOL was for sale. MSN and Google were obvious buyers. The only problem was both companies realized AOL was a good short term play, but a terrible long term one given the death of dial-up modem systems. So who would buy AOL and how much would they be willing to pay? Would Google let MSN swipe 10 percent of its business? If so, how high could Google drive up the price of AOL for MSN?
Google Makes Major Mistake
If rumors are to be believed, MSN and Time Warner have reached a deal on the AOL platform. So, how much will MSN pay Time Warner for AOL?
Nothing. Not one penny.
By the end of December 2005, MSN and Time Warner are expected to announce a partnership wherein the two companies will intertwine their Internet units and pursue joint advertising efforts. In turn, Google will be kicked off all AOL listings, to be replaced by MSN or some AOL-MSN mix of search results and advertisements.
The executives at Google are making a major mistake, a critical blunder. Google will lose 10 percent of its business to MSN without MSN being required to expend any resources for the business. The Google Adwords program, the primary revenue source for Google, will no longer be on AOL. Surely Google could have come up with something more enticing to AOL or at least forced MSN to pay some serious cash for the acquisition. Instead, it failed on both accounts.
Google is a great search engine, but this is just one in a number of business mistakes made by the Internet giant. How could it lose 10 percent of its business without making MSN pay for it? If MSN pulls this off, one will wonder who is at the controls at Google and what they could possibly be thinking.
